Use Advanced Search
In addition to enabling simple keyword search of publications throughout the site, eScholarship supports the use of advanced search for more directed queries. To access Advanced Search, click on the link directly beneath the search field in the upper right corner of any page. Clicking this link will launch an advanced search box that enables you to search by keywords, title, author, publisher, and publication year, as well as to narrow your search by peer review status, discipline, and campus affiliation.
Refine Search Results
eScholarship also enables users to narrow search results by peer review status, discipline, and campus affiliation following any global publication search (including a simple keyword search). Selecting any of the facets to the left of the results list restricts your results to those publications that correspond to your chosen criterion/a. Note: the discipline facets expand to 3 levels, enabling a fine level of specificity in choosing academic fields.
You can clear your selections at any time to return to the full set of results.
View KWIC Pics
Keyword in Context Pictures (KWIC Pics) is a display technology that enables users to view glimpses of PDFs from a search results list, allowing them to better determine the relevance of publications early in the search process. By hovering the cursor over matching keywords on the results page, users can view excerpted images of the actual PDF articles containing the selected keywords.
Search Within a Document
Readers can perform keyword searches within eScholarship publications. After landing at a publication, click the “Search Document” tab in the lower left corner of the screen. This tab will open a search box at the top of the left pane. Enter keywords here, and the results for this publication will be displayed in a list beneath the search box. Clicking on a highlighted keyword anywhere in the list will cause the document in the right pane to display the corresponding text.
Keyword searches within documents are also automatically generated by global searches. If, for example, you search all eScholarship publications for the keyword “metaphor,” any publication you choose from the search results page will display all the results for the word “metaphor” within its text upon arrival.
Collect Research in My Items
“My Items” allows users to save a list of chosen documents for the length of one session. (The session expires when the browser window is closed.) This list of collected items can then be emailed to the user and others via the “Email My Items” link at the top of the My Items page.
You can add publications to My Items from both the search results page and the publication display page. From the search results page, simply click on the “Save Items” link to the right of the publication you wish to collect. If you later desire to remove this publication from My Items, you can do so by clicking the “Remove Item” link in the same location.
To add a publication to My Items from the publication display page, simply click on the “Save Item” link in the gray bar above the publication. The item can be removed by clicking the “Remove Item” link in the same location.
Publications can also be removed directly from the My Items page, which can be reached at any time by clicking the My Items link in the site's top menu.
Find Similar Items
eScholarship offers suggested titles from the eScholarship corpus that may be of interest to users via its “similar items” referral service. Similar items can be accessed from either the search results page or within a specific document.
On the search results page, click on the “Show Similar Items” link to the right of the publication listing. Your click will spawn a box in the listing itself that displays five titles that may be of interest to you, given the focus of the chosen paper. To close the similar items box, simply click on the “Hide Similar Items” link to the right of the publication listing.
To access similar items from within a document, click on the “Similar Items” tab in the lower left corner of the screen. Suggested titles will be displayed in the left pane.
Share a Publication
eScholarship enables you to share research with chosen recipients through a collection of web 2.0 services. From within a publication, you can either email a link to that publication or post details about the publication to a variety of web applications. Simply click on the “Email” or “Share” links in the gray bar above the publication to begin this process. You can always email publications to yourself as well, for later use.
Sign Up for an RSS feed
eScholarship supports RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds for saved searches and new publication alerts. To receive an ongoing RSS feed of results for a specific search, click on the “RSS for this search” link in the green bar above your list of results. You will be taken to a subscription screen where you will need to designate an RSS reader to manage your feed. If you do not currently have an RSS reader, you will need to choose one before subscribing.
You can also receive updates about new publications associated with a particular journal, series, or research unit by clicking the RSS link in the gray bar on the landing page for that journal, series, or research unit. You will reach the same subscription page and will need to designate an RSS reader before subscribing.
Cite eScholarship Publications
Users can view an automatically generated citation for any publication within eScholarship (APA Style) simply by clicking the “Cite” link in the gray bar above that publication. The citation can be copied and pasted elsewhere for future use.
Citations are also listed for all publications in the Document Info tab in the left pane.
